Bath Excursion

Last week, we took an overnight excursion to Bath. It was a LOT of fun and a great change in pace right when I really needed one. The first reason it was awesome was because we went by train!!! We left from Paddington Station and took an honest-to-God above ground train. I mean, we’d been using the underground since we were here, but there’s a big difference between a subway and a train. I got a window seat and read Chuck Jones’ autobiography the entire time. It was very relaxing to just read a book for pleasure.

So yeah. Bath was pretty much fantastic. The town itself was very cool, because there were actual hills and trees and water! Like, a river running through the town! I’d been missing nature a lot, because there’s virtually none of it in London. So that was cool. The hotel was also nice. I had a cool room, and the food was great! For dinner, I had leek and potato soup, lamb’s shoulder with mint sauce, and fruit salad for dessert.

The Roman baths themselves were interesting. We basically just went through the ruins and took pictures. So that was cool. At the end of the tour, we got free samples of spring water. Warm spring water. Warm disgusting spring water. Warm disgusting and potentially radioactive spring water. Not cool. But then we went to the American embassy, aka Burger King. That was incredible.

That night, we (Adam, Zeke, Steve, Eri, Tabitha, and me) just hung around the hotel and played chess and cards. At one point we left and walked around the river. The next morning, we had a fantastic English breakfast with eggs, bacon, croissants, cereal, and more. It was great. Then we went on a 2 hour guided tour of the city where we saw landmarks like the Royal Crescent and a community hall where Charlie Chaplin performed. The guide was really nice. After the tour, we had lunch at a bakery, then we went to the Abbey which was the most beautiful church I’ve ever been in.

We went shopping at a secondhand thrift store. I bought a Glenn Miller CD, a Johnny Cash autobiography, the UK version of the seventh Harry Potter book, and a souvenir for Emily. When we were out, we saw one of those mimes who pretends to be a statue. Then we went to some more shops. Then we packed up and took the train back. And that was Bath. I took a lot of pictures and won’t post a lot here, but I’ll show you them when I get home.

Hey, guess what! I miss you guys. Bye.
